Center for Data-intensive Systems (DAISY)
Data management is an essential element of many large IT-systems, and the demand for advanced data management steadily increases, in part as a consequence of trends in industry and society such as the increasing digitization of media (e.g., audio and video); the growth in e-business, service, learning, etc.; and the increased diffusion of communicating systems and sensors, e.g., as seen in cars and mobile phones.
Daisy is an internationally oriented research center dedicated to research, education, and innovation within the area of data-intensive systems – systems where the management of data presents special challenges. Through its activities, Daisy aims to build synergetic collaborations among researchers from relevant disciplines and between researchers and practitioners. It is specifically a part of Daisy’s mission to initiate and participate in inter-disciplinary projects with other researchers and with industrial partners.
In terms of research, Daisy aims at being internationally renowned for conducting high-quality, cutting-edge research on selected topics within data-intensive systems. Daisy also places importance on being known for providing timely service of the highest standard to the international research community.
Daisy maintains a dynamic portfolio of research activities, some of which aim for short-term applicability and some of which aim for applicability only indirectly and in the long term. Speculative projects that target long-term applicability aim high and aim typically also at creating new knowledge. These projects form part of the basis for the more applied projects. The researchers at Daisy view inter-disciplinary projects as an important means of evolving the participating disciplines.
Daisy supports technology-driven innovation and has as one of its main goals to create value for its industrial partners.
Daisy offers postgraduate studies as well as research-based studies at the lower levels. Through experimentally based training, the researchers at Daisy try to build competencies in the students that render them sought-after researchers and practitioners.
