Around the globe, the interest in and market for artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies is growing rapidly, spanning many different fields and applications.
To respond to this significant interest and strengthen collaboration with industry and other disciplines, the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University has established a new interdisciplinary team working with artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The team gathers researchers from all research groups, covering the areas of distributed, embedded and intelligent systems, databases, web technologies and human-computer interaction.
Professor MSO Thomas Dyhre Nielsen is the newly appointed research leader of the team – and he has high expectations of the group:
- At the Department of Computer Science, we are working with AI and ML from a number of different perspectives. This is a joint forum where we can inspire and challenge each other to collaborate and benefit from our different approaches and professional competencies.
From mapping of bacterial genomes to prevention of floods
The researchers gathered in the new team are already involved in numerous national and international research projects in the field of AI and ML. Some researchers are working with basic research, having a more experimental or theoretical perspective, while others focus on applied research.
In one project, researchers combine AI and energy research to design and develop power electronics that adapt to dynamic operation settings and predict failures. On another level, researchers work with colleagues to pool their knowledge on DNA sequencing, graph analysis and machine learning for mapping more bacterial genomes faster. A third example includes the use of data-driven machine learning to control water in urban areas to prevent the number and extent of floods.
Finally, researchers from the department work with AI and ML from a human-centred perspective, for instance, focusing on how different visualisation techniques alter people’s fairness perception of AI systems.
- The domains differ, but in the end, AI-ML is the link that binds us together, Thomas Dyhre Nielsen says.
Strengthen partnerships both inside and outside the university
In 2019, Aalborg University established the AI for the People Center, bringing together more than 120 researchers from all faculties at the university. Thomas Dyhre Nielsen hopes that the new team at the Department of Computer Science can both contribute to expand and benefit from the work already being carried out in the center:
- The AI for the People Center is an important partner – and we are already involved in several projects related to the center. However, I would like us to play an even bigger role in this partnership and strengthen our relationship with partners both inside and outside the university, Thomas Dyhre Nielsen says.
