The 2019 Journal of Computer Languages Best Paper Award Committee has decided to announce Associate Professor Thomas Bøgholm, Associate Professor Lone Leth Thomsen and Professor MSO Bent Thomsen from Department of Computer Science, Aalborg University as winners of this year’s Best Paper Award.
The award is given for outstanding research, based on the paper “On the Semantics for Spreadsheets with Sheet-Defined Functions”, which the researchers from Aalborg composed in collaboration with Postdoc Alexander Asp Bock and Professor Peter Sestoft from IT University of Copenhagen.
In the paper, the researchers give a simple but precise operational semantics for the evaluation of extended spreadsheet formulas, with array formulas, sheet-defined functions and closures, as found in the Funcalc spreadsheet platform. The purpose of the semantics is to serve as a guideline for implementation work. It is also a starting point for further work on defining cost semantics for spreadsheet calculations, which may be useful for guiding parallelisation of spreadsheet computations.
Just last week, Microsoft introduced LAMDA, a new way to turn Excel formulas into custom functions – a tool comparable to what the Danish researchers call sheet-defined functions.
